Why I Chose The Higgins Building
Many of the loft buildings have ameneties such as roof top pools and/or gyms; I was hoping to find one- especially the gym as I have been spoiled with my home gym for so long. But many of the buildings that had these perks were either apartments managed by corporations (credit check would probably not fly) or they were in areas I considered undesirable (REAL skid row or too near Staples Center, meaning lots of traffic and congestion as there are so many events there).
The Higgins Building is relatively safe in that it is 1 block from City Hall and 2 blocks from Parker Center (LA Police HQ). And it has 2 great restaurants (Liliya China Bistro and Pitfire Pizza), a coffee shop (Groundworks), and a killer jazz/blues club called The Edison. There is also a rooftop deck with grills, but no pool or gym.
The final selling point was the loft that was available- I fell in lust at first sight. It is 50′ long (1100 sq ft) and has 8 - 9′ high window in the corner unit. The views were great- daytime or nighttime, it felt like I was watching TV as the scenery continually changed.
Almost all lofts allow dogs- that was not a problem. And this building is “condo”- the unit had an owner that would allow me a 6-month lease if I paid cash up front, which was not a problem after sale of my house. So it was a deal. I started lease on April 1st but did not plan to move in until closer to escrow-close on April 16th, as I still needed time to clean-out my house and determine what to move.
