A Few Thoughts About Working Out Downtown
I love my new club- Los Angeles Athletic Club, because it has the best selection of equipment, in the best condition, that I’ve seen. And it’s pretty dead there everytime I go (but I go mid-morning usually).
But I’m wondering when I’m going to get “spanked” by the directors for my gym clothing and where I wear it. I have never been a “take clothes to gym and change” kind of guy and am not going to start now- especially since I walk a mile each way- I’m sweaty when I get there and sweaty when I leave. The rules book says if dressed in athletic apparral that you must use stairs or service elevator (which I have not seen). I guess the best I can do for now is wear decent warmups with shorts and tanks, etc under them and hope I can slide by until someone says something. I totally respect the dress code on the “business” floors with meeting rooms and restaurants, but I am not going to get dressed “business casual” to walk in the front door of the gym.
The other thing that is wierd is that NO ONE on the street is dressed in athletic wear; I go through rough ‘hoods no matter how I go there (safe in daytime, but many stores have mariachi music blaring from speakers in the street, homeless are on every block, etc). And I’m cruising through in my Adidas track pants and Nike shirt- way out-of-place looking.
I’d much rather be walking with my dog as it takes the attention away from me, but what can I do? If I stay downtown after 6 months, I definently want to look for loft with gym in building or close by.
