I Just Recalled I Was Invited To U2 Video Shoot In My Hood…
Ok, so it was late 1987 - I had just moved to Hermosa Beach with my girlfriend from college (she was from here). Her brother was trying to become a big-time producer and got the role as producer for the U2 movie “Rattle and Hum”. (he actually went on to produce Robert Redford movie “The Milagro Beanfields”, and Exec Producer for HBO’s Deadwood, but I digress…) He called one day and told us to get in car right away and get to downtown LA where they were going to film the song “Where the Streets Have No Name” from a building roof in skid row. I said “hell no- I’m not going to skid row” and we blew it off.
It turns out it was filmed on roof at 7th and Main St (I’m at 2nd and Main) and 30,000 people showed up. This is an interesting clip as is shows LA Police before song trying to shut it down but Bono and gang got off the one song before they pulled the plug.
It’s funny how the commentator is talking about how “this is not a good area so be careful…”
