How To Help Skid Row On Thanksgiving?
In my past “beach” life I always wanted to come help at the Mission on Skid Row at Thanksgiving. But now that seems like such a “photo op” for the celebs- not a real way to offer a little encouragement or help to the homeless.
I have not figured out what to do yet- but I was hoping maybe you readers could give me some ideas. I can donate clothing and bedding, but that might make for jealousy/fights if one person gets an item and another doesn’t. I’m at a loss as to what to do, but I want to do something, and have it be personal (not just a check to the local charity).
Any ideas?
With a friend, you can invite someone who is homeless out to lunch/dinner, listen to their story, and talk with them. No strings attached, just a meal and conversation. Take a friend with you for your safety, his/hers, as well as the person who is homeless. As with any person, be sure to ask about food allergies, just in case.
November 12th, 2007 at 9:25 amErin- that is a great idea! I eat out every meal, and frankly, have no plans for Thanksgiving so this would work great. Maybe a brunch with one person and a late lunch/dinner with another. I don’t really have a “rapport” going with anyone yet, but I am going to get my game on this week and meet some cool people.
Stay tuned as I plan to dine with a homeless friend.
November 12th, 2007 at 9:32 amAt various times in the past I have dined with my Skid Row neighbors—where they dine. I’ve had Thanksgiving dinner at both the Midnight Mission and the Union Rescue Mission. Ruby has gone with me (the special meals are served at tables in the street).
I think something like this really helps break down barriers. The holiday meals at the missions are really good and special, so no one appears to question why Ruby and I are there. It’s always turned ougt to be a fun, friendly thing to do…..and there’s nothing more personal than sitting down and dining together.
The restaurant idea is good, too. I hope that all turns out well, Eric.

November 12th, 2007 at 12:28 pmThanks for your thoughts, Joe. Now I totally understand your view on dining where “they dine” but it seems like the real skid row is just a place for the celeb photo opp while they serve some turkey, once a year.
We’ll do the dog walk thing soon with Ruby and Isis and maybe you can introduce me to some folks. It’s a tough decision for me, but I figure doing anything is better than doing nothing.

November 12th, 2007 at 1:10 pmVolunteer the day before, the day after…everyday BUT thanksgiving. Being charitable or a good neighbor doesn’t need to happen on Thanksgiving day.
November 13th, 2007 at 9:55 amGood point Ginny- it’s just I don’t have anything to do on Thanksgiving… but I am feeling more charitable every day. Thanks for your input!
