Restaurants Would Do More Business If…

… the ones with patios would provide a little service outside.  I would like to eat when I walk my dog sometimes, but there is only one place I can think of where I can go “solo” and order on the patio (Pete’s, but they have fallen out of favor for me as I get terrible service).  Most places make you go inside to order, then you can take your food outside.  Fine when I have a friend with me, but many times I don’t.

Places coming to mind, but definitely not limted to Pastagina, Quiznos, Subway, LA Cafe, heck event Groundworks Coffee or Starbucks.  I can’t always tie my dog up while I order- she has chewed through leashes and I don’t like using her chain leash too much anymore.

I did have a good find the other day- a true “hot dog stand” that rolls up on Temple St. just a little east of Los Angeles St.  I don’t like hot dogs too often, but it’s a great break sometime in middle of a dog walk.

I have yet to hit the catering trucks that visit the construction site by me- but I’m tempeted at 5:30 in the morning to try a breakfast burrito.

I just wish there were more options for dining solo with my dog- or even picking up food “to go”.

Anyone have more ideas?  I think my favorite right now is First Cup Caffe… but it really is set up for you to order at the counter and then have someone bring the food to you.  Or sometimes I’ll call the Blue Cube and ask the owner, Rebecca, to meet me outside, which she does, but it’s still a pain for her and me.

You can follow the series I’m doing called Dining With Ruby, a guide to restaurants that let you enter with your dog. ( I currently have a review up on El Rancho.) However, I’ll give you a couple of advance tips that I wouldn’t share with anyone except another workout freak.

I’ve been to Groundworks in your building a couple of times recently with Ruby. Both times she received cookies from the people working there. The last time I entered with her, there was already one other dog there.

You like hot dogs? Try Weeneez on 5th and Spring. Ruby and I stopped in for a lemonade a couple of days ago. I’ve also taken Ruby there during Artwalk and I’ve dined on a hamburger with her there too. The owner Julie is a great person and this is a cool space with edgy art.

….and then there’s Shish Kabob. Hey, c’mon, don’t be so fussy. The chicken breast kabobs are pretty good. The owner has never had a problem with Ruby. Downtown Chick recently gave the place a good review.

Like Chinese? There’s….oh, never mind. You’ll have to wait for the review.

….oh, one more little tip. I don’t drink (I’ve broken a family tradition) but during the week you can take your dog into Bar 107. This was true three weeks ago so I assume the policy is still the same. The rule is that if your dog starts barking or fighting with another dog (or person), then you have to leave.

Very good tips, Joe. I will be following the series on your blog- it sounds great.
