How Was The NYE Party Downtown Last Year?
I’m not a big New Year’s Eve fan anymore… too dangerous driving, every place has extremely trumped-up dinners and cover charges, and it seems like most bars in the South Bay threw fire-code limits out the window.
But I remember hearing about the outside festival for past couple years down in Financial District, and this year there will be 2 of them, each expecting 10,000 people.
DOWNTOWN NEWS STORY “BATTLE OF THE PARTIES”
Frankly, I’d be pissed if was as near to that as I was to Detour Festival. Open until 4am, tons of alcohol available, and mostly DJs, not bands. Dennis, I’m waiting for you to chime in on this one :-)
Is it worth walking down to check out one or both? Ticket prices are pretty high just to go for an hour or so, but I’m willing if you downtown dwellers think it is positive experience.
So tell me about your experiences from last year, please.
Well, since you asked……
I pretty much share your attitude towards NYE and I don’t go to a show on December 31 unless its an act I’d be willing to pay the same amount to see on any other night of the year. As for me, I’ll probably catch the Supersuckers at the Viper Room on the 29th and/or Nikka Costa at the Roxy on the 30th and then I won’t feel the need to feed my concert jones on the 31st.
As for the Downtown events, they are all pretty much turntable-driven affairs and don’t hold that much interest for this old school rocker so I can’t offer any real comment. I know many people will avoid the Giant Maximus event just out of principle over the Giant Village fiasco of a few years back.(Search “Giant Village” at blogdowntown and find the comment threads with more than 150 anguished entries) I suppose if I was really up for a show on the big night, I’d catch the Gram Rabbit/The Blood Arm gig at the Echo.
To be honest, I’l probably try to find a small group of friends to share a few drinks and salutations for the coming New Year. Failing that, I might just wander the neighborhood looking for a bar without a doorman and a cover charge for the night. The bars at the Biltmore Hotel are often a good bet and that night they will probably be filled with gregarious visitors, many of them in town to catch the Rose Bowl game.
How about the Edison? What do they plan to promote that night?
December 26th, 2007 at 1:22 pmThanks Dennis- I knew I could count on you to give me some details. I haven’t heard about Edison yet- I might have a drink or two there as I like their food too.
I was curious also about how affected the loft dwellers/residents in the “party” are with street closures, drunken idiots, and the 4am closedown time. It sounds kind of disruptive, but maybe I don’t know the area very well were these parties are being held.
Happy Holidays!

December 26th, 2007 at 2:12 pmI just checked and The Edison event sounds more my speed, and it’s proximity to home makes it double alluring. Any of you bloggers / readers decide to attend, send me an email so we can meet and have a toast to a great 2008.
