I Really Hate Seeing This…
Not much to say- I walked by this guy yesterday around noon on Alameda- kind of chuckled to myself that if I was trying to take a wheelchair down that stretch of sidewalk, with all the tree roots pushing the concrete into major “moguls”, I’d need to take a break too.
Then I return 4 hours later and the guy has moved about 50 feet down the sidewalk, but still found some shade to crash in. I want to just pick him up, brush him off and put him back in his wheelchair but I’m sure no good deed ever goes unpunished…

could you tell if he was breathing?? Not sure how the Arts District works it but the Downtown Bid will usually help the guy up and make sure he’s ok. Then again,do we keep the different district BIDs numbers on us?
I don’t know their number myself. My advice is rather useless.
How are you feeling btw?? Getting stronger?
July 7th, 2008 at 3:09 pmMeeko- I don’t know if he was breathing, but it did not look like a “crime scene”. I think his “medication” was in the brown paper bag on the wheel chair…
Lot’s of tired “campers” out yesterday- I guess the heat was too much…

July 7th, 2008 at 3:28 pmBTW- Meeko, what would you have done? If you had a number, you’d call BID? I have no clue, but there are TONS of cop cars going by these guys. It is strange that on that stretch of Alameda (between 1st and 3rd) I’ve never seen any of the “bike dudes” (guys in purple, or white shirts in Little Tokyo) so I guess no one wants responsiblility for that stretch…
July 7th, 2008 at 3:48 pmgosh I dunno.. It seems to me that you are right about there not being a BID person around when you need one in that area. The Downtown BID seems a bit more available and I have seem them try to help.
I guess if I had the number I would call but then it seems like that area is a lonely stretch indeed. =(
July 7th, 2008 at 5:14 pmoh! and they aren’t all dudes.. the ones in the Arts District are chicks too! ;P
July 7th, 2008 at 5:24 pmYeah, the BID guys on Broadway are always “rousting” the homeless when I walk by in a.m.- funny thing is the homeless almost always show back up the next a.m.- I guess they want to get taken to jail? I dunno either… but the wheelchair guy made me “double-take” as he was far from help, and not in one of those cool electric things.
BTW- thank you for asking- I am definitely 100% and stronger (the food poisening incident actually was worse physically). And after all the scans/tests I feel pretty good about my condition- I may not be lucky in some things, but I do have my health!
July 7th, 2008 at 5:28 pmsorry for “sexist” comment- I see plenty of “women in purple” along Broadway… dudettes look pretty tough too!
July 7th, 2008 at 5:30 pmThey aren’t called hobos or campers anymore. I call them urban bedouins. LOL.
If I see them obviously passed out, I always roust them and get them on their feet. If they are drunk, they goto the intox center. If sick, LAFD is summoned. Problem is, THERE’S SO MANY of them!
The jails and hospitals kick ‘em out so fast nowadays.
Sad…..
July 7th, 2008 at 9:22 pmTrust me officer, I understand you are overwhelmed by these folks as I see the same ones every morning, getting told to move along, etc. by cops and then an hour later they are back… guy on bench at N.E. corner of 3rd and Los Angeles comes to mind.
But that one stretch of Alameda seems like none of the bike guys patrol- I guess it’s just edge of Little Tokyo so no one wants the responsibility.
