If It’s Not LAPD HQ Construction, The City Has To Wreck The Peace…
I was rudely awakened at shortly after 6am today by weird sounds, and rumblings, coming from below. I stumbled out of bed still groggy after waking up at my normal 3:30am (I forgot to turn off the alarm) and finally getting back to sleep- I looked at LAPD HQ and could not see what was causing the noise- it looked dead. There was no big cement pump in front of LA Times building either, but clearly something was shaking the building. I crawled back into bed, too tired to take White Dog out right then, and was able to doze off for another hour.
Then when I take White Dog out around 8am, as I get out of elevator in the lobby of Higgins, it’s like a war zone- the sound of jack hammers, the smell of diesel fuel, and clouds of dust await me. The sound was so loud it drowed out my Ipod which was cranked. 2nd St. was all but shut down from Spring St. to Main St.- I guess they had to do this on a Saturday, but I can’t see why they are allowed to start at 6am when other construction cannot start until 8am. And to think they are talking about building a subway or grade-level train right in that same place starting next year- if I was an owner I’d be super pissed! Here’s a pic and a couple of videos from my walk to the gym this morning- I wonder what Sunday will be like (and to think these guys are getting paid time-and-a-half or double-time at union wages to make my life hell…). It will be interesting to see if they get the street put back together in time for The Edison valet to set up shop- that will kill their business of 2nd St. is closed…

I feel queesy now.. I think I have motion sickness. ;P
August 23rd, 2008 at 3:35 pmYeah, so much for “image stabilization” when I walk like a tank… but that’s how it felt as the ground was shaking too. It’s a mess down there still- Cal Trans guys trying to direct traffic against the stop lights… get real cops and turn off the lights would make sense as people are confused.
