Food Tid-Bits
A few little updates about places I like to go to…
Redwood Bar and Grill has stopped serving the Brunch menu on Saturday and Sunday- such a waste! They are still open the same hours (11am on Saturday, 10am on Sunday), just with the “standard” menu. I don’t understand why they don’t serve a few brunch items, especially since their menu was not very “extensive”- their Tortilla Espanola was to die for, and I’ve never seen a similar dish anywhere…
I finally ate at The Nickel Diner- met fellow bloggers Pamela and Sean there for brunch Sunday (thanks for pushing me to try the place- and PAYING for my breakfast- much appreciated Sean). The menu has had me drooling since I first saw it, and the food met and surpassed my expectations (even though they did not have breakfast potatos, one of my simple pleasures, but the fries were a good substitute). The place has a great, neighborhood vibe, and it’s obvious that this place will be a long-running success for Monica, Kristen, Sharlena, and the rest of the investors. What other place can get 96+ comments on an Angelenic post?
Julie Rico is still making some of the tastiest breakfasts at Weeneez- while not open Sunday, she serves up breakfast 6 days a week, and I still think her Eggs Benedict is perfection- not a thing about it that I would want done differently. Although I do miss the “real” home-fried potatos that have been replaced with shredded, frozen hash browns…. I still have not had a hot dog there, as her cheeseburger (add bacon) is perfection too.
Origami’s Happy Hour seems like it is getting more expensive… now they are charging $1 extra for the soy paper substitution on the hand rolls, and $4 extra for requesting real crab in the Lobster and Crab roll (which is deep fried, and I do not recommend). A friend and I went there last week and ended up with a $70 bill (2 margaritas and 1 Sapporo included). I should have saved the receipt as it seems like some of the prices may have gone up… BUT it is still highly recommended for happy hour- just don’t go too hungry as I did
i wish you were still working from home; they close @ the nickel like 330pm so until they do dinner it’s going to be hard for me to go over there.. I get mad cravings late in the afternoon and I’m out of luck.
I ended up eating that ding dong within an hour of returning from our visit, and omg! those things could send you 2 the hospital with sugar overload. LOL
believe it or not I think I like their tres leche better.. but I can see myself asking for the ding dongs again when I am REALLY REALLY craving the chocolate. =)
Sean thought the 3.50 price point was a bit much but I figure I can forgive the price on a once in a blue moon basis. I mean the red velvet cupcakes at Lot 44 (which I really love) are almost like freaking $5 a piece. (those are big enough to split though).
September 22nd, 2008 at 7:43 pmOk, last week I tried Origami again after the disastrous first time (where we sat for 20 minutes with no acknowledgment & walked out.)
I went for their Happy Hour on a Friday, which starts at 4pm. Our group of 3 got there at 4:15, and settled in. Waitress came by to take our order, but told us there was no bartender on duty. Only beer/wine, or simple cocktails (rum & coke, etc.) and even the simple cocktails we ordered were HORRIBLE!!!
Seriously? No bartender? For Friday Happy Hour?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Their one saving grace (ok, two) was the waitstaff was at least nice and attentive this time around, and those $1 Kobe Beef tacos. Yumm-o!
I’m not yet feelin’ the love that you do for this place, but I will try ONE more time sometime in the future.
September 25th, 2008 at 3:52 pmLA Lola- you are having the WORST luck at Origami (as they are with bartenders). After their “grand opening” party, they fired the 2 main bartenders and the recently hired manager. I liked Jeff and Chrissy, but they recently hired a great new bartender- Lisa, but she’s not full time and I don’t know what they plan to do.
I would have been pissed if I went there and they didn’t have a bartender… don’t give up on them quite yet though, as I think they’ll get it right (I don’t know why I feel that way, but at least the owner makes a decisive move when he decides something is wrong).
