Another Parade??? WTF???
I just got back from a White Dog walk- and running into a huge street closure/parade on Broadway that was causing traffic snafus all around Main St. and Spring St. What was the party for? Columbus Day… ok, now I am all for a good excuse to party, but this looked like one STUPID parade. I swear there were no less than 5 shitty pickup trucks with speakers hanging out the back and blaring some unrecognizable hispanic music, being driven on Broadway as part of the parade. What does this have to do with COLUMBUS DAY? Then there is the couple of groups of Cabelleros - Mexican cowboys, albeit on VERY pretty horses, that were going up Broadway and then down Spring St.- WTF??? I am very confused as to what event I am attending (attending not on purpose, mind you, just walking my dog).
And on that note, I am asking, why don’t any of the downtown “news-oriented” blogs mention this crap BEFORE it occurs? Show me a mention of this street closure nightmare in a previous post… I don’t think you can. The big blogs get a kick out of teasing us with restaurants that are doomed to open late, political planning that never happens, but they cannot tell us about events that affect us BEFORE they happen. I’m sure I’ll see some photos in about 3 days on one of the big sites- great coverage. Who cares. Tell me BEFORE it is going to happen.
EDIT: Where was coverage of Hillary event at The Edison? I am far from political, but I think someone should have dropped the $500 and covered the event (in all fairness, the LA Times didn’t do shit either… but that is expected from that dying dinosaur of a media outlet).
Hey E,
Tell me about it. I had to deal with the parade going on outside my window…just lovely. The only kind of “notice” I saw in the area were the temporary no parking signs that were put up on Broadway.
ATL had to check online to see what was going on this morning to discover that a parade permit had been issued.

October 12th, 2008 at 1:42 pmD- I knew you’d be thrilled with this event- I was in your ‘hood with Isis, thinking about you, A, Dakota, and Sally.
I mean I love a good parade- just a little warning. We could have made a picnic out of it if I had a “heads up”.
Take care bro…
October 12th, 2008 at 2:14 pmWe had a street closure notice in the Hellman.
October 12th, 2008 at 5:29 pmThis one snuck up on me, hence the lack of a blogdowntown mention. I was headed back on 6th this afternoon when I ran into the closure. I don’t really have an excuse, though, there was a notice posted in our mailroom that’s been there for the last week or so. I just didn’t read it.
October 12th, 2008 at 7:34 pmWell Columbus *did* “discover” San Salvadore & other Central American locals, establishing permanent settlements & trade and was eventually the blame for the decimation of many indigenous peoples by virtue of bringing common (but deadly)disease and pestilence by way of Spain & Portugal.
The Spanish Culture infiltrated and decimated the indigenous cultures but also brought many things from Europe (like Horses) and brought back stuff to Europe like tomatoes which are original to Central & South America.
In Berkeley they call Columbus day “Indigenous Peoples Day” because of the damage that Columbus actually did to the cultures of America, by bringing all the Europeans here.. and eventually bringing us to today.. A very Euro-Centric culture at the expense of the Native & Hispanic cultures.
I’m rambling but I figure if they had a permit for their parade (which they did) and it’s a weekend it can’t be that much of an inconvenience. You got home ok right?
October 12th, 2008 at 9:02 pmE- you are a good man and I know you’d tell us what is going on (if you knew about it too). I just can’t keep up with all the info and I really go to you and Rich/Stephens site to find everything I need to know about downtown- no joke.
You all do a great job consolidating info for us, but I would love more “proactive” stories on these events- pics after the event are kind of “ho hum”.

October 12th, 2008 at 9:48 pmSean: We had a street closure notice in the Hellman.
Sean- please scan your street closure notices and post for all to enjoy. Thank you
October 12th, 2008 at 9:54 pmYeah, that’s Berkeley for ya. What do you expect?
Damage to North America? That “damage” keeps us from looking like the “Turd World” cesspools of Mexico, Central America and South America.
October 13th, 2008 at 12:08 pmCentral Div Officer- you are KILLING ME!! LMFAO, and still smiling… keep it up please!
October 13th, 2008 at 7:48 pmAnd I was not joking about “Bezerkly”…
