Downtown Dog Walk Party- Oh, The Controversy!
I have been following a po;ular thread on blogdowntown.com about the potential to have a dog park in Pershing Square- where there are many valid opinions put into comments- including dog haters, children-haters, and cat lovers. So Wednesday night at 6pm I was aware that there could be some sort of confrontation-there was even a threat made that police would check vaccination/official registration status (A Senior Lead Officer was in attendance as a courtesy- thank you Officer Marco Duarte- bring your pooch next time!).
Nothing transpired other than a lot of loving dog owners getting together (and caring about picking up after our pooches). As usual, I could only stay about 30 min. as White Dog needs to “meander” by then.
Meeko on Main came by for her 2nd Dog Walk, and took some great photos. Check out her Flicker set of over 100 pics of the dog walk anniversary party.

Sorry we didn’t get to meet at the anniversary party! Saw you and your pooch, just didn’t get around to you guys before you left. Next time!
That Blogdowntown comments section is infuriating. Especially since it appears as though it’s only a select few (maybe even just one or two) people voicing opposition, but using several different names to make it look like there’s a ton of people opposing this dog park.
SOOOO lame. That Crandall guy posts under the name Juanito, makes a stupid comment, and then posts under another name, “I agree with Juanito…blah blah.”
Dumbass (’scuse my French…)
And his comments don’t make any sense. He seems to believe anyone with children or dogs should be banished to the suburbs. Yeah, that’s gonna happen. I had to stop reading those comments, they were getting ridiculous. What a troll.
October 14th, 2008 at 11:48 amHey LA Lola- I did not know you were a dog owner until Brian’s post about meeting you. I just was surprised as I expected to meet you storming out of Origami sometime
Ken (Urban Briun) does such a good job with the dog walks, and is a great ambassador for downtown dog owners. It’s funny when he has to “take the gloves off” and expose the Juanito thing.
I wish I cared more but I think I’ll be back at the beach long before a dog park (public) ever happens downtown. The political climate here is way too intense for me.
October 14th, 2008 at 11:59 amE,
Did you know the “Nerd” shirt guy in the photo?
Shower shoes on while downtown, Buddy Holly glasses….
Nerd? Oh yes!!
Must be prez of the Weezer fan club, haha.
October 14th, 2008 at 9:34 pmOfficer- that’s Jim of trainedmonkey.com and rawmaterials.com fame- and yes, I think he and I are both proud software nerds (I did not notice the shower shoes- ha ha!
Be careful, as his wife Celia is one of the strong downtown women that I spoke of recently…
October 15th, 2008 at 3:18 amI thought the NERD shirt was for the group, I could be wrong though.
I too stopped reading the crazy comments over at blogdowntown. I am all about voicing once’s opinion but there comes a point when people are just acting foolish and unfortunately the discussion we are talking about has come to just that.
Does anyone else get the sense there is a strong voice amongst those ‘old school’ downtown dwellers?
October 15th, 2008 at 10:41 amthe “nerd” shirt, purchased from target, is a reference to the cult movie classic, “revenge of the nerds” and the name on the back of the shirt is “booger”, after a character from the movie. those are reef sandals my husband is wearing, not shower shoes. last i checked this is still southern california, where the temperatures still hover around the 80’s and not minnesota (where jim is from), where the temperatures are otherwise.
btw, what are you, a central division fashion cop? very nice of you to go out of your way to stand in judgement of and disparage a total stranger participating in a nice community event.
those aren’t “old school” downtown dwellers trolling on blogdowntown. i suspect they’re full of hot air and not much action. i’m hoping that downtown dog owners will show more action and voice their support of an off-leash dog area in pershing square to their respective city councilmen. ken can’t do it all for us. if you’re active in DLANC, then make your support known there as well.
October 15th, 2008 at 4:03 pmactually, they are olukai sandals. my reefs wore out.
October 15th, 2008 at 10:14 pmThanks for the correction on the shirt. I was going to ask if Jim went to see NERD at the Wiltern recently but I’m glad I didn’t
October 16th, 2008 at 10:37 amHmm, I didn’t know that NERD is not cool, but GEEK is (I use both to describe myself interchanably).
Check out this LA WEEKLY article on the hip GEEK events (NOT NERD) that actually sound a little interesting.
Jim- your sandels are cool! Just don’t laugh too hard when I break out my boardshorts for a Nickel Diner visit…
October 16th, 2008 at 12:02 pmLighten up Francis!
We are just having a little fun over here. “Have a good time-all the time”.
One of my favorite mottos.
Shower shoes, reef shoes, mandals, Jesus cruisers.
Same-same.
October 18th, 2008 at 1:35 pmLMAO- “Jesus Cruisers”- hey, I’m an equal-oppornutiy offender… I think all is cool, I mean you wear a “NERD” shirt out, it may get a comment.
You should hear some of the comments I get when I wear my favorite t-shirt:

October 18th, 2008 at 2:54 pmOy, that ridiculous blogdowntown thread. I dropped out because I couldn’t deal with the hatahs anymore.
Celia, I’d like to get more involved in lobbying for a dog park and playground in Pershing Square. How do I go about doing that?
October 20th, 2008 at 12:40 pmHi Li- I saw your posts (and frustration) on thread and thought it very cool you were sticking up for us dog owners when you don’t have one- THANKS! You know the Urban Bruin that posted on that thread is Ken, who has organized the Downtown Dog Walk for the past year (and ran for some sort of BID office). Maybe he has some info too if you care… I think you can contact him through the site.
Eric
October 20th, 2008 at 2:59 pmThanks Eric! I’ll contact Ken.
I love dogs but my kitties would slaughter any poor pooch I brought home.
October 20th, 2008 at 7:23 pmMEEKO- I need to thank you again for the great photographs you took at the dog walk party (did Ed’s ever show up anywhere?). Every time I look at the first pic in my post where Isis is lunging at you I have to laugh!
I really like your “eye” for a photograph- your latest set, from your attendance at
Dave Bullock’sEric Richardson’s Downtown Photoshoot event, is killer. Anyone that appreciates downtown photography should check out this Flickr set from Meeko. Thanks again- I hope to see you and Sean soon!
Eric
October 20th, 2008 at 7:47 pmhey.. thanks for the kind words. =) I wasn’t feeling too inspired that morning of the shootdowntown meetup. That’s actually Eric Richardson’s event. I don’t know if it makes much difference.. Dave was there as was Ed but it’s definitely Eric’s baby, so to speak.
I’ve been taking care of Alexander.. he had an emergency on Saturday and was fortunate that Sean had a car this past weekend & we were able to take him in & get looked at. He’s got a lower urinary tract problem (crystals blocking his tract) If left untreated he can die of kidney failure within a couple days so grateful we got him on meds now & changed his diet. I need to take him in no later than 2 weeks from now for followup.
ps: as for other dog pix not sure what happened as he had pix and notes too..
