Puppy Love!!! Or Welcome 6 New Members Of Dog Walk Downtown!

I’m so happy I get to share an amazing story (and pictures) with my fellow dog lovers. LA Lola is a proud grandmother to 6 new puppies! They were born Wednesday, and it’s a great, heart-warming story that I’m going to let LA Lola tell in the words she e-mailed me (with her permission, of course).
===================================================================
Nina (the mother) was adopted from the Humane Society 5 weeks ago…and no, I most certainly did NOT know she was preggers at the time. Neither did the folks at the Human Society (or if they knew, they didn’t tell me) nor did my vet who examined her a few days after. I guess it’s hard to tell that early in the pregnancy. We all knew she was in heat, but not already knocked up. She had a little cough when I adopted her, so they didn’t want to spay her right then and there. If they had, we would have known right away, but instead, they told me to bring her back within 30 days after she was done with her meds.

So I was walking her about two weeks ago (ironically, a couple days before she was going back in to get spayed), and just looked down, thinking, ‘my goodness, you’ve gotten fat.” Then, it slowly dawned on me…so we go to the vet, and he confirmed it. Two more weeks later, I come home to her in the corner birthin’ babies.

As for the father: who knows who the little hussy hooked up with at the shelter. :-) I guess we’ll find out as the children get a little older.

She’s some terrier mix (border terrier, I think) and her babies will be mutts just like her. Thankfully, all are accounted for (I’m keeping one) and I have a long list of adopters for the other 5 littles. She’s such a good doggie, and everyone wants one of her puppies.

What’s funny is that I specifically wanted an older dog, and not a puppy, because I didn’t want to deal with any puppy issues, I just wanted a mellow dog that was already trained and older. And now look what I have, less than a month and a half after getting her! I’m sure God is laughing at me right now. Seven dogs for the price of one!

But I’m taking it all in stride (hoping the Human Society will at least help with the vaccination costs or something) and marveling at nature during the whole process. I have to keep the pups for 8 weeks with the mother, so it will be interesting!! I could literally, just sit there and stare at them all night. In fact, that’s what I’m gonna do right now after I leave work.
===================================================================
LA Lola- you are a great lady to adopt Nina in the first place, especially an older dog which most people shy away from. If the Humane Society doesn’t help out with the vaccinations and such from this unknown pregnancy, maybe us downtown dog lovers could take up a little collection or just meet for drinks and have a donation jar. You are going to have some pretty large, unexpected expenses for the next 8 weeks or so.

I could say so much more, but it will have to be added to commnts as I need to get ready to “get my Pimp on”… so without further ado, I present the pics of the proud mother Nina and her pups!

    Oh wow, that was quick & you posted all the pics!! How nice!

    And thanks for the “donation” tip, but I think if the Humane Society doesn’t step up, the adopters will be more than willing to cover some of the costs, since they’re getting a cutesy puppy for free, but that was very generous of you to suggest.

    I’m just glad I had them and was able to find homes for all of them (instead of having them born at the shelter), especially since they are black dogs. There’s this phenomenon, called “Black Dog Syndrome” where black dogs are more likely to get euthanized at the shelters because they are so overlooked and ignored by potential adopters. A lot of black dogs are doomed once in a shelter because lighter colored dogs are chosen, which is another reason why I chose Nina. So the fact that these six have good homes means they get to escape any possibility of languishing at the pound.

    Just something to keep in mind in case anyone is considering rescuing a dog from a shelter.

    Hope everyone has a great weekend!

    LA Lola-any updates or funny stories you can share about the puppies? I swear, i love scrolling through the pics of them- “Neenerz-Preggers” kills me; the look on her face is priceless. I used to have a black terrier mix that I loved so much- I guess the “terrier face” is something you love or you can do without.

    I can’t imagine what it’s like taking care of (and worrying about) six puppies- share some of the good and bad! What did the shelter say when you contacted them about “hey, she just delivered six puppies!”

    Not suprisingly, the shelter has been mum on the whole situation & non-responsive. It’s not like they really owe me anything, they did warn me I had a 10 day “free-look” period with the dog, and if I took the dog to the vet and decided I didn’t want her, I could return her (like that could ever happen after spending 2 seconds with her and falling in love…)

    I signed a *gasp* waiver on that too. I know I’m just SOL, but that’s ok, most of the people adopting the puppies said they would pony up the vaccination fees, so that’s a relief, whew!

    I do love that terrier face, I will email you a great pic of her mug along with more puppies when I get home today. They’re still pretty much just sleeping all day, their eyes haven’t opened yet, but they’re crawling around (not walking) and hiding under blankets and such, causing little panic attacks for me everytime I try to do a head count. But the vet says they’re all healthy and being well taken care of by mama. Thanks for asking!
