Ma Petit- So Much Potential

When word spread that a new bakery was about to open in the neighborhood, I was less than excited, as I really don’t like sweets like cakes, cookies, danishes, etc. But when Rich over at Angelenic posted their menu- I took serious notice and was counting the hours until I could try some of the offerings.

My first thought was that this was way too ambitious of a menu, with very aggressive hours as well (6:30am - 9:00pm M-F, Sat and Sun 7:30am - 8:00pm). Their chef(s) must be going crazy with such an extensive menu that has many items that must be pre-cooked

So I was a little leery of their grand opening on Art Walk Thursday; I walked by early and saw no crowd, and decided to stay away on Thursday. Friday, after my happy hour feast at Origami, I stopped in to see what was happening- I wanted to confirm that they would indeed be open for breakfast on Saturday as I fully intended to stop and eat there Saturday after the gym. The lady told me that they would only be serving omelets, and I asked if that included eggs benedict, at which point she checked with kitchen and told me yes, the would have the eggs benny…

So Saturday I stop by around 10:00am and am told they only have waffles… damn it! I wanted eggs and made a run to McDonalds before they stopped serving Egg McMuffins- my low-budget Benedict when in a pinch.

Today I go there, still not giving up, as I can sense the potential- the place is beautiful, the workers are trying so hard to make people happy, and I figure I can find SOMETHING to eat. Hallelujah, they have Eggs Benedict, but it may take awhile, I am warned, as they have to make the Hollindaise sauce from scratch. No worrke, no hurries, so I decide to try something sweet while I wait- a banana danish that is pretty darn good (but if I’m going to have something sweet for breakfast, I’d much rather have something REALLY sweet- CinnaBunz comes to mind). I strike up a little small talk with the delightful hostess, Maria. She actually lives in the area at the Alexandria and works at the LA Times during the week, but thought it might be a good idea to have a “backup plan” considering the dire state of LA Times employment right now.

While waiting for my Benny, D of D and A on Broadway strolls in, looking to get some “comfort food” for his wife A who is under-the-weather a bit. We chat a little about working out, and he confirms what I had been meaning to ask him, that he played football at USC. I figured so much, as he is a tank- literally blocking out the light from the door when he entered Ma Petit. I can see this place becoming like The Nickel, where neighbors are always running into each other- very cool.

When my Benedict arrives, I am so hungry I forgot to take a picture. The hollendaise sauce was exceptional, as was the bread the poached eggs were on (more like a croissant than an english muffin), but there was no canadian bacon/ham, and no potatos. Very disappointing, but again, I am giving them the benefit of a “soft opening” mind-set, and look for big things in the future (they claim full menu will be available beginning Monday, Nov 24th). I asked what was available for the afternoon menu today, as I see SO MANY things I want to try. I was told pasta, and meatballs, would be available so I will probably go try a shrimp or meatball dish early this evening. The price can’t be beat, and the people are great- I’m hoping for the best for Ma Petit!

    Hey E,

I think I misunderstood your question yesterday morning…when you asked if I played ball at USC, i thought you were referring to basketball, as I was literally thinking about how LAAC had a basketball court and that I could play there during our conversation yesterday. My bad, i should have a bit more clear about that…

While I would be proud to say that I’ve suited up for the cardinal and gold, unfortunately, that’s not the case for either football or basketball…I’m just genetically pre-disposed to having wide shoulders because…uh…well, I have no real idea why. All I know is that it makes it more difficult for me to find shirts for work.

Re: Ma Petit. The pastries i picked up were really good and a far better value than 1st Cup down the street.

Ah- for some reason when I had read your previous posts at D and A I thought you played football at USC, and I can see why you thought b-ball as we were talking about LAAC. Sorry for the confusion. But you do LOOK like you should have played varsity football…
