April Is JACKHAMMER Month @ Higgins!

A couple of ominious posts to the Higgins mailing list last week got my terror level to yellow:

I might have missed if anyone posted any notes on the scheduled construction on Main Street the entire month of Apr.. From 8pm till 5am!!. If anyone have any information pls. do share.

Response from the HOA President:

Management and the Board opposed the time constraints on this vigorously, but ultimately the City put their iron fist down. We will work with the construction company to see what can be done about mitigating noise during construction.

Well, last night it became a reality- I was awakened at 1:45 am by the sound of jackhammers echoing off the new LAPD building, and I am on the OPPOSITE of building from construction- it continued on-and-on, but I was able to sleep but did awaken shortly before 5am to hear it again. Pity the folks on the Main St. side- here’s a comment from this morning:

wow! 11:15pm on a Wednesday, and they are just turning on the jackhammers to tear up the street right in front of our building. It actually sounds like they are IN my room jackhammering my floor. Something tells me the city doesn’t care too much about us.

When I took White Dog out this morning, there wasn’t much torn up YET, which leads me to believe it’s going to be an interesting few weeks. This might even top being without hot water for 10 days - and WE STILL DO NOT HAVE HEAT!

I saw this post for a unit in Higgins for lease (I believe it’s for sale too)- what a great time for someone to move in on the corner RIGHT ABOVE CONSTRUCTION- no wonder the price is under-market for that unit… too bad the owner did not get it leased last month, as I think he has to disclose the nightly interludes…

Ugh, that’s terrible. I wonder what the justification is for not completing the work during normal hours, or at the very least into the evening.

No doubt it’s traffic issue B; since it’s all month long, it worries me as they have no problem shutting down Main St. in day for numerous parades and rallys, etc.

I agree with you on the traffic issue, and the notion that they have no problem shutting down the area for every parade imaginable so why not for actual work? They could have posted a notice and said a certain area would be closed for the next month from whatever time to whatever time.

I think this is one more of those downtown LA things I shake my head at and wonder why.

Sorry you have to deal with this insanity.
Sleep is overrated anyway, right? :(

If you don’t have heat, that’s a clear-cut inhabitability issue to break your lease, if you wanted to.

I’ll look for a sale on noise-cancelling headphones for you.

Time to move in with the honey ;)

Hey Rich- good to see you around! You know, I’m actually glad they are doing it at night as I can sleep through most everything… but in the daytime, I’ve been working at home and have daily conference calls with IBM for past 2 weeks (trying to fix bug, and they actually are RESPONSIVE!); I CANNOT talk on a phone in my place when heavy construction is going on- even in bathroom it is terrible. But I don’t live right over the jackhammers either.

And no heat I can deal with (no a/c would be a pain- it’s same unit, but not hot enough yet). The no-hot-water was almost a deal-breaker though…
