The Midnight Cacophony On Main St. Continues…
The Month of the Jackhammer continues on Main St. next to the Higgins building, from 9pm until 5am daily. Even though I am not directly over the construction, it echos off the nearby new LAPD and rattles my windows- last night from 2am - 4am it was obnoxiously loud. I figured we just have to put up with it in the name of “progress”, and hell, we live downtown and hear trash trucks backing up with the obnoxious “beep-beep-beep” at all hours of night, not to mention sirens racing down the streets below.
But now I’m pissed- it turns out they are not closing Main St. entirely like I thought they were- there are always two lanes open northbound on Main Street. So what the hell is the urgency of doing this work at night- and I assume at a premium cost for the union workers???
At least we know who is in charge of this mess at the Department of Public Works- Ms. Tonya Durell (Tonya.Durrell@lacity.org, 213-978-0333). This is the posting she sent to our building’s management company, who in turn sent it to the building mailing list:
One of the owners sent the following e-mail to Tonya on Tuesday, 04/07 at 8:00pm, and copied the building’s mailing list:
Dear Ms. Durrell,
Thank you for the construction update. One of the biggest questions I have is why this work is not being done during the day? I would understand if the street had to be closed in order to have the kind of access necessary, but that is clearly NOT the case. Given the inordinate burden being put on the residents of this building, what is the justification for this scheduling?
I would appreciate it if you would use “reply all” to share that information with all of us.
Of course we have not heard anything back…
For the record, here are some of the comments on the mailing list from the past day:
jarring during the middle of the night…thank God for the RAIN last
evening - at least we were able to SLEEP all night
This city does so many asinine projects- I’m waiting with bated breath for an answer from Ms. Durrell to see how she tries to make sense of this project. And we have over 2 more weeks of this nightly insomnia-inducing urban dissonance to live through- I’ll bet she’s just stalling until the project is almost complete to answer. She is one more city worker that is on my shit list…
I think I would murder someone if I owned in the Higgins Building.
First, you don’t get a park like you were told, then your Heater/AC goes out for months, and now you have to listen to jackhammering all night? And how much did those units sell for?
wow..
April 9th, 2009 at 6:34 pmI love my view, the location, and the people, but the building is WAY overpriced- check this out #907, opposite corner from me, terrible view, right over construction, $659,000- ha ha ha!!! If I were to buy downtown in that range, it certainly would not be in Higgins…
