Nightly Jackhammer Work Suspended!
I guess people can make a difference at City Hall, but but the cynical side of me believes something else happened- like a little light went on in the head of someone at Public Works with the thought of “why are we paying double time when this can be done in the daytime?”- or another snafu in the utility work they are doing- surely not just the complaints of Higgins occupants could have changed the schedule? Here’ the e-mail:

Good Morning Ms. X,
The night work is suspended. Thank you for all of your feedback! After hearing back from you and other residents that noise levels were much more than anticipated, the project team decided that this work could no longer go on. I appreciate your help in this matter.
Best,
Tonya Durrell

That’s great news for everyone up there - it certainly makes you wonder why it took two weeks and letters/calls for things to finally change.
Is it me or is there a real sent of clueless/out of touch behavior by the city? They just don’t seem to “think”.
April 13th, 2009 at 1:04 pmIt was Easter, Eric. It’s all about the resurrection and in this case it was the resurrection of Ms. Durrell’s brain and thinking skills. Her letter dated on April 9 was just an auto-pilot push job. Then she was reborn as someone who could think and feel and reason and that led to the letter dated April 13. She rolled the rock away and now you can finally sleep in peace.
April 15th, 2009 at 8:29 amHi Joe-
I still think they said they would stop consturction at night because they are all but finished- I can’t see the city stopping anything because a few Higgins residents complain- not one the wheels are in motion. But send an e-mail to make it LOOK like they care is a good PR move…
I hope you had a great Easter- give Ruby a belated-Birthday pat for me.
April 15th, 2009 at 8:44 amHey Dude,
When I was riding my bike the other day, I had an opportunity to talk with some of the construction workers as they walked to their cars. They said the reason they were ceasing with the night work was because the vibration from the jack hammering was interfering with some kind of late night safety testing/maintenance that the city was conducting a few blocks down in the metro rail tunnels. Sadly I think it was the needs of the city to conduct other projects rather than the voices of the outraged citizen that got the late night construction to cease. Strange Tonya didn’t mention that huh?
April 22nd, 2009 at 12:39 pmAh Ha!!! I KNEW the Higgins folks did not have any pull when it comes to city politics and construction. I really was happy that there was the one tenacious lady (C) who kept at Toyaa to explain the rational behind nighttime construction, but I was skeptical at best.
And there has been no jackhammering in the daytime, so they were done with that anyway- just the heavy machinery moving back and forth and digging…
