The Unexpected March

I must have missed the e-memo about this March- no big deal, in fact, I smiled a little when I saw this and I was not stuck in traffic nor trying to cut through the March with White Dog.

i’m not sure that it was related to iran — when i was in the area later, they were rallying outside the ronald reagan building and there were a number of buses for people with seiu signs and shirts. they were protesting proposed california budget cuts, particularly in nursing homes, from what i saw.

and i would expect a lot more green clothing in a protest of the iranian election.

SEIU does make more sense! Although I know there were several election protests in the LA area.. can’t tell what’s really going on from so high up.

I still don’t know what this march was for- but I do know I’d be PISSED if I was trying to go down Spring to my loft at Rowan, etc and these idiots had street blocked for quite awhile… if it was for Iraq I’d be double-pisseed (if you’re going to march and snarl traffic, at least make it about something in this country please).

Hey Jim- I ran into your charming wife at Universal City Metro station last week and we rode the Red Line home while chatting. It’s amazing how much time flies if I can have an intelligent conversation on the subway/bus- it was refreshing. Congratulations on all the good stuff happening to you two- you are my HEROS!!!

Anyone go to the Whacko Jacko march?

What a waste of police services.

I had the displeasure of working the event from 2 am to 3 pm.

Total con to the citizens of LA.

Sorry Central Division Cop that is was such a displeasure to work the Michael Jackson memorial. However, for business owners all over Downtown who had only 1/4 of occupancy and noone at their happy hours or lunching…The Michael Jackson Memorial filled up their hotels, restaurants and stores all week. Be grateful for all the taxes incurred during that time…it pays your salary.

Now come on, it did not bring THAT much revenue to DOWNTOWN- most “entertainment” people would not stay or eat downtown anyways- the celebs that flew in were staying in BH, West Hollywood, etc. and eating there too.

Plus, some of us believe that there was at least some truth to the fact of MJ “behaving badly” with little boys.

Granted though, I liked his music in the 80s.

    Future Downtowner,

I don’t think the business owners that were confined within the frozen zone made much profit that day. Matter of fact, they made ZERO. All of LA Live was shutdown!! That’s a huge commercial area.

Combine that with all of the money that was needed to police the MJ detail and you pretty much end up in the negative.

    Dennis Smith Says:

Downtown merchants got more bupkis than business on the day of the Jackson memorial. However, according to published reports, it seems that a sandwich shop in Wrightwood of all places reaped a windfall when they landed a $50,000 contract job to provide box lunches for the officers assigned to provide security near Staples Center.

Good point Dennis- and great to see you around. I’m moving down closer to you- 6th and Spring next weekend…(more to follow).

    Central Division Cop Says:

Hey, I didn’t even take my “box” lunch.

That thing was sitting in the sun for god knows how long. I sustained myself on laughter and coffee!

You should have seen the human carnival that came out for that one.

    The horror, the horror….

    Dennis Smith Says:

Dude- I was wondering if the recent silence was due to preparations for an impending move. I hope you like the new place and your new neighborhood.

CDC- After finishing that 13 hour shift, hope you managed to rustle up a decent meal and a good scotch.

    skidrowdude Says:

Dennis- yeah, was keeping on the “down low” while deciding what to do- now it’s time to move… it will be a good shot of adrenaline, and nice to have no heat and hot water problems (fingers crossed).

    Den,

A good Italian meal, followed by some Western European “Jesus Juice” was definitely consumed by this flatfoot.

    Bottoms up!
